because of the limited space one has indoors, i build a two level layout.
one level at about two and a half foot height, the other at five foot.
along one wall i am building two crossing ramps to connect both levels of the layout.
one of these ramps will be built with threstles, the other with a stonebridge.
i started with the stonebridge.
it cost me nearly nothing.
the trackbeds are sides of former bunkbeds, the structure is made with parts from storeshelves, that i replaced with nicer looking ones.
the track is made from straightened R1 curves that i bought for a bit over a dollar each.
all i needed were styropor foam boards for the facade of the bridge.
first i drew a scetch of the highest section with a fine marker.

Wegen des platzmangels einer innenanlage baue ich eine anlage mit zwei ebenen.
Eine 75cm hoch, die andere 150cm.
An einer der laengswaende gibt es zwei sich kreuzende rampen, die die beiden ebenen verbinden.
Eine dieser rampen wird mit einer "trestle" holzbruecke gebaut, die andere mit einer steinbruecke.
erstmal baute ich die hintere, die steinbruecke.
Die hat kaum was gekostet.
Die gleisunterlage sind seitenstuecke alter stockbetten, das geruest ist aus blechregalen aus meinem geschaeft, die durch huebschere ersetzt wurden.
Die schienen sind gerade geklopfte R1 kurven, die ich fuer knapp einen euro pro stueck kaufte.
Alles was mir fehlte, waren einige platten styropor.
Als erstes skizzierte ich die hoechste sektion mit einem feinen filzschreiber.

Nachdem das stueck mit einem scharfen kuechenmesser ausgeschnitten war, benutzte ich es als schablone fuer die anderen sektionen.
the only crucial thing was to get the pattern of the stones right, for connecting the sections.
Das wichtigste war, das steinmuster so zu machen, dass die sektionen ineinandergreifen konnten.

to make the bridge three dimensional, i glued some styropor blocksat the backside, to hold thin sheets of styropor bent to the form of the arches.
the glue used is carpenters white glue.
Um der bruecke tiefe zu geben, hab ich duenne, gebogene styropor streifen mit bloecken an der rueckseite der fassade festgeklebt.
Das ganze ist mit weissem tischlerleim geklebt.

so i decided, to fill it with some kind of a storeroom.
with a welding iron i structured the wall, then painted with some crack-filler for walls. mixed with black colour powder for darkening concrete, and some water.
Der niedrigste brueckenbogen ist nicht hoch genug, um einen schoenen hinter- oder mittelgrund unterzubringen.
also brachte ich in ihm einen "lagerraum" unter.
Mit dem loetkolben strukturierte ich die wand, und malte sie mit einer mischung aus wand-fugenfueller, gemischt mit schwarzem farbpulver fuer zement und etwas wasser.

when the sticks were glued, i laid the wall over the door, marked the bow and cut the sticks with a scalpel.
Das tor hab ich aus rauh gebuersteten eisstoeckchen auf eine plastikplatte geklebt.
Wo das tor ritzen hat, ist das plastik mit filzstift geschwaerzt.
Danach hab ich das wandstueck zum markieren ueber das toor gelegt, und mit einem skalpell die stoeckchen gekuerzt.
some very thin acrilic grey and some homeopatic china ink for aging is all i will do for the moment.

the hinges have to wait for the outcome of a scientific research.
i put some scraps from a corned beef tin in lemon juice, vinegar, raw potatoe, cooked potatoe and a boiled egg.
(everything that is bad for oldfashioned cutlery)
the result was: cornedbeef tins don't rust easily. i have to look for other material.
the wall i finished off with the rest of the used "paint" (adding a bit more filler, some yellow and some brown acrilics)
it was very thick, so i could dab it on. thus i got a plastic stone superfice.
(need to buy a smaller brush)
sehr duenne, graue acrylfarbe und eine homeopathische anwendung von verduennter chinatinte zum altern soll fuer den moment reichen.
(wenn ich mal herausgefunden habe, wie ich abblaetternde farbe simulieren kann, kommt das tor noch mal in die mache)
Die fehlenden gehaenge warten noch auf den fortgang "hoch wissenschaftlicher" experimente.
Bis jetzt hab ich corned beef dosen weder mit zitronensaft, noch mit essig, rohen oder gekochten kartoffeln, oder gekochtem ei zum rosten gebracht.
(hab alles versucht, was altmodischem besteck geschadet hat)
ich werd mir wohl ein anderes material einfallen lassen muessen.
Die wand hab ich dann noch mit dem rest der grundfarbe, etwas mehr fueller, gelben und braunen acrylfarben nachbehandelt.
Die mischung war sehr dick, so konnte ich eine rauhe oberflaeche auftupfen.
when the track in front has got its roadbed and the ground between track and bridge is modelled, i will make a wooden platform in front of the door and the inset wall. naturally from coffee stirrers. (from what else??)
Wenn der boden zwischen der bruecke und dem vorderen gleis fertig ist, kommt vor den bogen noch ein kleiner hoelzerner bahnsteig. natuerlich aus kaffeestoeckchen. (aus was auch sonst??)
i painted the bridge.
some weatheriung and last touches will be made, when foreground and background are done.
for paint i used thinned crackfiller for plaster with various mixings of black. the sort one uses to tone wall paint.
as pinsels i used one 5cm (2") broad, one 1 cm broad and one of these foam-paintrollers. a small one, which i cut in width to fit the height of the stones.
the bridge got two entire coats of paint, then i painted a lot of individual stones, till i got what i wanted.
(not so good to see in the pics, but the higher part of the bridge has a lighter tone, than the smaller left part, so that the higher part does not look too overpowering.)
so, die bruecke ist bemalt.
kleine details und alterung kommen erst dran, wenn vorder- und hintergrund fertig sind.
Als farbe hab ich verschiedene gemische aus fugenfueller und schwarzem abtoener fuer wandfarben genommen.
Pinsel: 5cm und 1cm breit, sowie eine schwamm farbrolle, die ich so schmal schnitt, wie die steine hoch sind.
Die bruecke hat zwei komplette anstriche bekommen. ausserdem hab ich so lange einzelne steine in verschiedenen toenen bemalt, bis ich mit dem effekt zufrieden war.
(auf den fotos nicht gut zu sehen - der hohe teil der bruecke ist heller als der niedrigere, damit er nicht zu erdrueckend wirkt)
